Feeling jaded by your business? How to get your spark back

In the beginning, setting up and running your own business is exciting, overwhelming, and like starting out on an adventure. When you have seemingly endless enthusiasm for your pet project, it can be tough when you eventually hit the wall. You will hit a wall sooner or later. Running your own business can be hard, lonely work and it can really knock the gusto out of you. How you overcome this feeling of weariness for your own business will determine your future success.

Getting that spark back when you’re feeling jaded can be a simple matter of making a few changes that will reinvigorate your passion for your business and put you back on the right path. These changes may be to your business, or to yourself, helping you to regain the enthusiasm for it that was in abundance in the early days.

Re-assess!

Your first point of call should be to get some business advice. There are small business advice centres where you can turn for consultation. Getting a fresh pair of eyes to look at your business can reassure you, if nothing else, that your business is just fine. A business advisor can help you see the good in your business, and also find areas which could be fine-tuned, giving you something to work on which will give your business a little shove in the right direction.

Find new skills

If you’ve lost the passion because some things are starting to get overwhelming, then why not set aside some time to learn a new skill? Business courses in everything from doing your own accounts to marketing can help give you confidence to tackle those essential business chores that are dragging you down. An evening class in something completely unrelated to your business, such as arts and crafts, or yoga will provide some time out, and give you something to think about for a couple of hours a week other than the day-to-day essentials of running a business.

Find yourself

Once you’ve had a third-party assessment of your business, and had a little bit of time to do something different, then you can really start to think about you and how you can find the skills and enthusiasm within yourself to take your business to the next level. How you do this is entirely up to you. Some people take several months away and go on an extended holiday, while others do something small every day.

NLP training is something that Steve from Milton Keynes Window Cleaner chose to do.

He says “Over the last 2 years I’ve been on my NLP journey. My company Clear Magic really became boring, uninspiring and mundane. I really needed to find something I was interested in as I felt like it had come to the end of the road.

“I have taken the practitioner course and master practitioner course with Edge NLP earlier this year with a view to switch my career. I became master prac qualified and all I can say is that it has ironed out all sorts of things that have been holding me back.

“The secondary gain of my journey is that I have found a new passion for my business Clear Magic, which has resulted in me also becoming a partner in a new business, Milton Keynes Window Cleaner. This is aimed at the domestic window cleaning market to run alongside the commercial sector we have in Clear Magic.”

So not only did Steve find the spark he needed to stick with Clear Magic, he found enough energy to take on a related, complementary business too. If you find that your enthusiasm for your business starts to wane, then rest assured that you are completely normal, and that reigniting that passion within you is more than possible. Steve did it, and you will too!
